日中韓辭典研究所所長。ドイツ生まれのユダヤ人。イスラエル、アメリカ等６ヵ国に移り住んだ。大量の対訳文を読み込むことによって15ヵ国語を習得。イスラエルのキブツで出会った「漢字」に魅了され家族と共に来日後、漢字を体系的に学ぶ方法を考案し、長年に亘り『講談社漢英学習字典』等各種辞典を編纂。国内外で多くの講演・論文発表・執筆活動を行う。
